Individual Therapy

Individual counselling and therapy can be a vital resource for working through difficulties you face in your life. It offers a unique opportunity to talk about what is troubling you with a trained professional in complete privacy.

You may want help with a particular problem or you may wish to embark on a more open-ended inner journey of self-exploration and discovery. Whether you are feeling stuck or lacking direction in life, therapy can provide a sense of relief and also rediscovery of inner resources, including greater capacities for relationships with significant others (a partner but also a parent, child, friend or colleague).

Issues commonly brought to therapy include: anxiety, bereavement, depression, fertility issues, life transitions, loneliness, relationship troubles , stress and trauma

Couple Therapy

Relationship or couples therapy allows a couple to look at established patterns of relating supported by the therapist. The major aim of couple therapy is increasing your knowledge about yourself, your partner and the patterns of interaction between you.

Therapy becomes effective as you apply new knowledge to break ineffective patterns and develop better ones. My goal as a therapist is to help you each make better adjustments and responses to each other without violating your core values or deeply held principles.

I see couples facing a wide variety of difficulties ranging from sexual difficulties, conflict around finances and extended family, disagreements around parenting, feelings of disconnection and general discontent.  I also see couples wanting a approach separation or divorce in less destructive manner.

Common questions about therapy

FAQ

  • INITIAL CONSULTATION:  The initial consultation is an opportunity for us to meet and talk about your concerns, whether as an individual or a couple. It will also allow us to think together about whether you will find therapy useful, in view of your emotional and psychological needs, as well as more practical considerations.
  • SESSIONS:  Individual sessions are 50 minutes and we meet once-weekly at a fixed time to be agreed together.
  • CANCELLATIONS:
    • I charge for all contracted sessions which you decide not to keep unless you give me 48 hours’ notice. If I have to cancel a session, I will wherever possible, offer you an alternative appointment.
    • If there is a mutually convenient time to reschedule a missed session, I will endeavour to do so. Please be aware that this may not always be possible in which case missed sessions incur a fee.
    • If I cancel a session, you will of course not be charged. I will give you advance notice of any upcoming breaks or holidays, typically at Christmas, Easter and during the summer period.

The length of the therapy will depend on the complexity and the duration of the concerns you bring to therapy.  These are issues to be discussed at the initial consultation and, after that, to be reviewed regularly in order to track change and progress.

There are also circumstances when we may consider time-limited therapy and agree a fixed number of sessions from the outset. Such time-limited work aims to focus on a particular issue and it can be useful to have a clear sense of an ending to help focus and anchor the therapy.

My fees will vary, following a sliding scale depending on your income. Students and unemployed will be charged less. My fees reflect my specialist training and experience in working with individuals and couples. Please contact me to discuss them further.
